Freedom Fighter

Without the freedom to do what you want, you are nothing.
Without the freedom to do what I want, I am nothing.
In the entire course of my existence, music has been a monumental component of my life. To say I "eat, sleep, and breathe music" would be an understatement. There has never been a time where I would say I didn't love music in any shape or form. Yes I have considered giving up and quitting, but in the end, I knew that wasn't an option considering how far I've come.

When I read 1984, I think about how their society has been stripped of their freedom and individuality, leaving a blank slate of desolate emptiness and inhumanity. Everyone is stuck in a tiny cage of basic human rights and are only left with little to stand upon. They've lost their human rights to do as they please, including pursuing their interest, hobbies, and even having feelings.

When I think about if we lived like that today, I would be nothing. The person I am presently, would be a foreign, unknown character that no longer exists. It scares me that in the world of 1984, I could be a lifeless robot who would deny any recollection of knowing music scales and knowing how to hum tunes.

I (and many others) couldn't ever think or desire to be in a world where you aren't able to be who you want to be. It doesn't even have to be for music - imagine a world where one wasn't allowed the freedom to voice their opinions or become your dream occupation. I realize that there are many countries in the world today that even take away those basic rights, but there must be something we can do.

George Orwell wrote 1984 as a warning to future societies to avoid becoming everything written in this book. We as a society must work together to prevent regressing back to the madness that past and some current leaders are working towards today.
