Golf is a sport. Yes, it is tritely as referred to as "a hobby"or "just a game" but football is a game and so is soccer. I come from a family of golfers, as I am also myself and it irks me every time golf is ridiculed. Non-golfers stereotype that golf is a hobby because the elderly play can ride in cart all day while drinking booze. Golf is a mental sport.
As a devoted and roughly experienced golfer, I take golf seriously. I am well on my way to pursuing golf professionally as I am going to be playing for UCLA next fall. My dad is a teaching professional and my brother plays for the men's golf team of UC Riverside. Since I am pretty well known as golfer, in my everyday life at school and wherever I hear crude comments like "why do you even play golf?" and "all you guys do is sit in a cart all day and drink". People may not see it but I am affected by these vulgar comments. Just because golf isn't vigorous like football, soccer, and basketball doesn't necessarily mean it isn't a sport. Some like to say "if an old man can play it then it's not a sport". So what if an old guy can play it? It's a lifelong sport. What other sport can you play at the age of 85? To fix the disrespect golfers get from time to time, the critics should give golf a try. We all just need to be a little more empathetic and give golfers a little more respect because golf is a damn hard sport and patience is a must.

If the critics try out golf one day, they'll realize how difficult golf really is. They'll eventually respect golfers and how much patience is needed for golf and maybe pick up a new interest with golf. They'll learn that there is an acquired distance for each club, the wind comes into effect, and lots of physics involved. Being empathetic and respectful goes a long way. Golfers aren't given enough credit. They play hooky from work to golf, make business deals on the golf course, and know how to a enjoy a scenic 4 hours with some of their best pals. Golf is frustrating. Golf is rejuvenating. Golf is critical and somehow it blows my mind every minute I'm playing it.
